Miguel San Miguel, AIA

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Miguel graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Design before being attracted to Southern California’s energy and vitality. Upon attending UCLA, he was a 3-time recipient of their Graduate Opportunity Fellowship, 2-time nominee for an SOM Foundation Traveling Fellowship, editor of the journal Surface, won a Graham Foundation Grant, and his Master’s Thesis with advisor Thom Mayne,FAIA, received a best thesis award.  He completed his graduate studies in 1997 and was awarded a Master of Architecture Degree with Distinction. 

Miguel has held teaching positions at Ball State University, Otis College of Art and Design, Texas A&M University, SCI-Arc, and UCLA while balancing practice in the professional world. He has lived and studied in Italy and Guatemala and energetically continues to pursue his own varied architectural interests, having traveled extensively throughout the United States, Western Europe, Central America and Asia.

Miguel has over 20 years of extensive experience gained in union with the award-winning firms Moore Ruble Yudell, Fields Devereaux, Kirkpatrick Architects & Associates, and R&D Architects, prior to starting his firm.  During his career he has been the lead designer on award-winning projects with varied building typologies, scales, and complexities, including; multiple LEED-rated libraries that were among the first in the United States, urban design and master-planning, restorations under the Historic American Preservation Act, civic, cultural, institutional, educational, hospitality, religious, commercial, and residential spaces.  Accumulated, projects Miguel has been involved with total over 1,500,000 square feet of space with construction cost over $200,000,000.

Miguel approaches his work conceptually, thoughtfully and pragmatically believing in a collaborative process, a dialogue, with his clients at all stages of the design process. Each program, budget, site, and client are unique but he believes that all spaces ultimately are created and meant to enrich and transform the lives of their users. To breath life into their day while providing a spatial harmony and calm sanctuary from the world outside. He works closely with every client from inception to completion of the project to ensure that each client’s unique set of experiences and vision for the final built work will be enacted and will positively impact their lives.
